The Tangled Garden / Le jardin sauvage, 1916, by J. E. H. MacDonald (1873–1932) Oil on beaverboard, 4713⁄16 x 60 in.
Born in Durham, England, J. E. H. MacDonald (1873–1932) emigrated to Canada in 1887 with his English mother and Canadian father. After studies at the Hamilton Art School and the Central Ontario School of Art and Design, he joined Lawren S. Harris and several other Canadian artists in what became known as the Group of Seven. These like-minded artists agreed that Canada’s rugged wilderness needed to be recorded in a distinctive painting style, departing from European tradition. The Tangled Garden—with its vibrant hues and patterned accents—captures a brief yet arresting moment in the wilding of a common backyard garden.
