Cottage Garden with Sunflowers, c. 1906, by Gustav Klimt (Austrian, 1862–1918) Oil on canvas, 110 x 110 cm (435⁄16 x 435⁄16 in.)
Though his portraits of women may have attracted more attention, Austrian painter Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) also produced many magnificent landscapes. In the late 1890s and early 1900s, the artist spent summers at Lake Attersee, near Salzburg, in the company of his friend and muse Emilie Flöge and her family. Here he painted some of the most compelling and abstract landscapes of his career, rejecting traditional rules of perspective and flattening foreground and background into a single, color-filled plane. This garden at the inn and brewery at Litzlberg, where Klimt often stayed, made a fine subject for his work in this style; bright blooms in a profusion of colors, sizes, and shapes explode across his canvas like fireworks.
